Type What it is
Solo 401(k)  Explore a solo 401(k) for up to $69,000 in contributions (2024 limit). Opt for pre-tax (Traditional) or after-tax (Roth) contributions. Not ideal for agents with employees. Include a spouse if they earn income from your real estate business. 
 SEP IRA  The SEP IRA suits self-employed individuals with limited employees. Deduct the lesser of 25% of your net self-employment earnings or your contributions. Note that the percentage you contribute for one employee, including yourself, must be consistent for all eligible employees.
 IRA (Traditional)  Anyone can open an IRA, making them suitable as either a primary or secondary retirement account for self-employed agents. IRAs come with an annual contribution limit of $7,000 for those under 50, and $8,000 for those 50+.
 Roth IRA Similar to the traditional IRA, the Roth counterpart is suitable for agents who would rather pay the taxes upfront by foregoing the tax deduction provided by traditional IRA accounts.

  • Since you are self-employed, you won't have employee-sponsored insurance and will have to seek it out from the private market.
  • You may be eligible for discounts through your state-sponsored marketplace depending on your income.
